Further research urgently required to establish efficacy of interventions to prevent suicide and self-harm in young people

Deaths arising from suicide are increasing.  One person dies every 40 seconds according to WHO statistics, with suicide being the main cause of mortality in young people aged 10-24. 

Latest multidisciplinary review from Melbourne, Australia, fails to pinpount effective interventions to manage self-harm and prevent suicide however findings indicate:
  • School-based prevention programmes are worth expanding on
  • Various “talking therapies” warrant further investigation (CBT, IPT and attachment based family therapy
